Chiayi Hospital was founded in 1895 as the first medical institution in the Chiayi region. In 2013, it was renamed "Chiayi Branch of the Ministry of Health and Welfare" following its establishment in accordance with the Ministry of Health and Welfare. For over a century, Chiayi Hospital has played a vital role in safeguarding the health of local residents. Located in the central district of Chiayi City, the hospital campus spans 3.5 hectares. The main building is a modern 12-story steel-framed structure with a total floor area of over 53,000 square meters. It has a registered bed capacity of 789 beds, making it the Ministry of Health and Welfare hospital with the highest bed count in southern Taiwan.
Through the concerted efforts of its directors and staff, Chiayi Hospital has received multiple accolades, including the SNQ National Quality Mark from the Society of Taiwan National Quality, evaluations and certifications from the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration and the Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation. It has also developed a comprehensive elderly care area in line with national long-term care policies. By partnering with National Cheng Kung University Hospital and Medical College, it has become an official clinical and teaching hospital. In 2014, it achieved special excellence in the new hospital evaluation system, followed by accreditation as a teaching hospital in 2017 and recognition as an excellent regional hospital in 2018.
