In response to the digital wave driven by big data and artificial intelligence (AI), Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital (KMUH) has achieved Stage 7 of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) certification by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)—the highest international recognition in medical information management systems. KMUH is the first medical institution in southern Taiwan to receive this prestigious honor.
Jaw-Yuan Wang, President of KMUH, noted that the hospital had achieved HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 certification in 2023. That same year, KMUH also received the "Smart Hospital Institution-Wide Mark" at the 25th National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA). In 2024, the hospital was ranked 8th in Taiwan on the list of "World’s Best Hospitals 2025," jointly published by Newsweek and Statista—an accomplishment reflecting growing international recognition.
Attaining Stage 7 HIMSS EMRAM certification places KMUH as the only medical center in southern Taiwan to reach this highest level of international smart healthcare recognition. Wang emphasized that this certification is not only a milestone but a stepping stone toward the hospital’s vision of becoming a global leader in smart healthcare.
Three key initiatives submitted during the certification process received commendation from the review committee:
Henry Horng-Shing Lu, Vice President of KMUH, remarked that the hospital’s advancement in AI applications not only supports clinical decision-making but also helps alleviate the issue of understaffing in healthcare. So far, KMUH has developed 39 AI models tailored to clinical needs and implemented them across its hospital network. These tools support clinicians in making accurate judgments, improving treatment precision, and reducing the risk of medical errors—showcasing the real-world benefits of smart healthcare.
