Senhwa Biosciences’ CX-5461 Partners with Global Pharma Giants’ PD-1 Drug, Entering the $100 Billion Immunotherapy Market
2025-10-23

Senhwa Biosciences announced that its investigational drug Pidnarulex (CX-5461) has been selected by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) to participate in its five-year anticancer research program, advancing into a third clinical trial project. The study will combine CX-5461 with the approved PD-1 inhibitor Cemiplimab (brand name Libtayo) to treat microsatellite stable colorectal cancer (MSS CRC), a cancer type resistant to immune checkpoint inhibitors. This collaboration marks Senhwa’s official entry into the global immuno-oncology market valued at over US$100 billion.

The CX-5461 program represents the third clinical trial under the NCI’s five-year anticancer initiative, and an Investigational New Drug (IND) application has been submitted to the U.S. FDA. The PD-1 inhibitor Cemiplimab (Libtayo) will be jointly supplied by global pharmaceutical leaders Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.

Although immune checkpoint inhibitors have risen rapidly in recent years, their overall response rate in solid tumors other than melanoma remains low, typically around 20–30%. The innovative combination of CX-5461 and Cemiplimab aims to significantly enhance the immune response in solid tumors, broaden the indications of PD-1 inhibitors, and potentially overcome therapeutic bottlenecks in MSS CRC and other low-immunogenic cancers.

According to recent data, cross-border licensing and M&A transactions in Asia’s pharmaceutical industry soared to US$66 billion in the first seven months of 2025 alone, surpassing the total deal value of the entire previous year. Several collaborations exceeded US$1 billion, reflecting how global pharmaceutical giants are rapidly redirecting strategic resources and acquisition efforts toward the Asian market, reshaping the global landscape of innovative drug partnerships.

This international collaboration underscores the novel mechanism of CX-5461, which has attracted strong interest from major global pharmaceutical companies for its potential to enhance immunotherapy efficacy. With the continuous expansion of the immunotherapy and precision medicine markets, Senhwa Biosciences is well positioned to stand out amid Asia’s surge in biotech innovation.

Microsatellite stable colorectal cancer (MSS CRC) accounts for about 95% of all colorectal cancer cases and currently lacks effective treatment options. Its incidence among younger populations has also been increasing in recent years. Many patients show poor or resistant responses to immunotherapy, and the high treatment costs coupled with a lack of reliable biomarkers further complicate clinical decision-making.

According to Coherent Market Insights, the global cancer immunotherapy market is estimated to exceed US$150 billion in 2025 and is projected to maintain double-digit annual growth, potentially surpassing US$300 billion by 2035. The combination therapy segment has emerged as a key focus for both R&D and investment within the industry.
