DARWIN PRECISIONS and AUO Partner with Tungs' Taichung Metroharbor Hospital to Launch a New Era of Smart Elderly Rehabilitation
2026-01-04

As Taiwan enters a super-aged society, smart healthcare has become a key trend. Tungs' Taichung Metroharbor Hospital, in collaboration with optoelectronics leader DARWIN PRECISIONS, and with the guidance of the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Industrial Development Bureau and the Institute for Information Industry’s Digital Transformation Hospital Program, has teamed up with AUO to develop an immersive rehabilitation system. This system integrates Micro LED transparent displays with 3D AI imaging sensors, setting a new benchmark for elderly rehabilitation.

Transforming Elderly Rehabilitation with Immersive, Interactive Technology

The innovative system targets elderly care and rehabilitation by combining high-brightness, high-transparency Micro LED technology with interactive, gamified designs. Professional rehabilitation exercises are transformed into engaging activities, significantly boosting patient participation while enhancing treatment continuity and effectiveness.

Micro LED Application Milestone: Targeting High-Growth Smart Healthcare Market

DARWIN PRECISIONS Chairman, Tsai Kuo-Hsin, emphasized that this achievement marks Taiwan’s entry into a new era of intelligent rehabilitation and establishes a key milestone for Micro LED applications. With advantages such as low power consumption, high brightness, and modular flexibility, Micro LED technology has potential beyond healthcare, including smart wearables, laptops, and AR/VR headsets. According to TrendForce, the global Micro LED display market is expected to exceed US$1.6 billion by 2027, with smart healthcare and wearable device applications projected to grow at over 40% CAGR, highlighting Taiwan’s strategic potential in this field.

Tungs' Taichung Metroharbor Hospital Chairman, Tong Min-Che, stressed that in response to an aging population, the hospital is actively promoting smart healthcare transformation, including the establishment of smart elderly wards and next-generation rehabilitation centers. The immersive interactive rehabilitation system developed with DARWIN and AUO is a key realization of the hospital’s “Elderly Care X Smart Technology” strategy. By combining transparent displays with 3D AI, medical teams can monitor patients’ movements and rehabilitation responses in real time, making long-term care more engaging and feedback-driven.

“Elderly Fun Machine” Using Micro LED AI Leads Upper-Limb Rehabilitation Breakthroughs

The 30-inch transparent Micro LED display-based “Elderly Fun Machine” has officially launched. Its high-transparency design allows interactive images to appear on a claw machine-style glass display, blending real and virtual environments. AUO’s Micro LED screen delivers 600 nits of brightness with 60% high transparency and wide color gamut, maintaining clarity even in bright environments. Low latency ensures hand movements sync seamlessly with on-screen actions. The thin, lightweight display integrates a Logitech C930e camera, making it compatible with medical and recreational systems while offering long lifespan and low energy consumption, suitable for extended use in healthcare settings.

The gamified exercise assistance system translates professional physical therapy movements into interactive challenges, recording activities and training status in real time. It provides objective evaluation data for hospitals, day-care centers, and long-term care facilities, effectively improving muscle strength, cognitive focus, and flexibility training outcomes.

Mini LED Video Wall with AR Motion Interaction: Efficient Group Rehabilitation

DARWIN PRECISIONS also introduced a 200-inch Mini LED video wall equipped with an AR motion interaction platform, developed in collaboration with Yueh Yang Technology, creating a smart, collaborative group rehabilitation model. The system integrates virtual street-crossing scenarios, post-stroke balance training, and health-promoting AR games designed for dementia and impaired patients.

Dr. Lee Min-Hui, Director of Rehabilitation Medicine at Tungs’ Taichung Metroharbor Hospital, noted that AR motion and cognitive games are especially suitable for dual-task training in patients with mild dementia, enhancing both cognition and motor coordination. After one month of use, with over 2,000 participant experiences, the platform has shown benefits in cognitive improvement and meets the demand for efficient rehabilitation exercise in day-care and long-term care settings.

Recent studies confirm that integrating smart displays and AR technology in elderly rehabilitation enhances exercise motivation and quality of life. Combined with real-time monitoring and big data analytics, physicians and therapists can adjust personalized treatment plans more effectively.

DARWIN B Balance 3D Body Monitoring Device: Nine Key Health Metrics in Three Minutes

DARWIN PRECISIONS also unveiled the “B Balance 3D Body Monitoring Device,” utilizing advanced AI and 360-degree optical 3D scanning technology to measure nine critical health metrics—including body fat, muscle distribution, water proportion, and balance—within three minutes.

Paired with TOPRGB OPTO’s 42-inch LCD strip display, the system provides an elegant, intuitive interactive experience. Built-in Intel RealSense depth sensing and AI modeling generate precise 3D body models and postural analysis, with historical data comparison to support personalized health management and monitoring by users and healthcare staff.

Research shows that by 2025, the smart health monitoring market is moving toward 24/7, personalized, and remote management. DARWIN targets health check centers, postpartum care centers, gyms, and long-term care institutions, reducing healthcare staff workload while leveraging cloud-based analytics to enhance precision and convenience in health management.

Tungs’ Taichung Metroharbor Hospital has also adopted DARWIN’s 31.5-inch Spectra 6-color e-paper displays for health education and announcements, promoting paperless, low-carbon sustainable management in elderly wards and main lobbies.

DARWIN PRECISIONS stated that the company will continue integrating AI and 3D sensing technologies to deepen its smart healthcare and health monitoring portfolio, offering comprehensive solutions covering health assessment, long-term care services, and rehabilitation assistance, aiming to lead the future of intelligent care.
