Formosa Biomedical Technology announced on August 1 that, on behalf of Formosa Plastics Group’s regenerative medicine ecosystem—including IVY LIFE SCIENCE—the company signed a strategic partnership agreement with Japan’s globally renowned Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. on July 22, marking the beginning of a deep collaboration in regenerative medicine between Taiwan and Japan.
This partnership sets a precedent as the first time a Taiwanese company has been entrusted by a Japanese pharmaceutical firm for regenerative medicine CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) services. It will also pave the way for Formosa Biomedical’s regenerative medicine products to enter Japan, establishing two-way technological exchange and product deployment as both sides work together to expand their presence in the regenerative medicine sector.
Formosa Biomedical Chairperson Sandy Wang stated that regenerative medicine is a key driver of future medical innovation. By revitalizing and repairing human tissue and cells, it offers new opportunities for disease treatment. She emphasized that Formosa Plastics Group has long been dedicated to integrating industrial and medical resources, pioneering new possibilities for the regenerative medicine industry.
“We are honored to form a strategic partnership with Rohto Pharmaceutical, a company internationally recognized for its ophthalmic products and Mentholatum dermatological medicines, as well as its significant achievements in regenerative medicine,” Wang said. “By combining Rohto’s expertise with Formosa Biomedical’s strengths in regenerative medicine R&D, clinical trials, and manufacturing, this collaboration will expand the Taiwan–Japan regenerative medicine market and bring more advanced treatment options and hope to patients worldwide.”
Formosa Biomedical President Liu Hui-chi noted that Formosa Plastics Group currently operates IVY LIFE SCIENCE’s GTP facility in Taoyuan and is planning to launch its first GMP regenerative medicine manufacturing plant with substantial production capacity in 2026, further strengthening its capabilities. Meanwhile, Rohto has already established four regenerative medicine facilities in Japan, building extensive expertise and proven track records. Future collaboration will include CDMO partnerships, clinical trials, and regulatory approvals, accelerating product development in both Taiwan and Japan while deepening international applications of regenerative medicine.
Rohto Pharmaceutical, under its corporate vision “Connect for Well-being,” has been actively advancing regenerative medicine to provide new treatment options for patients lacking adequate therapies. Its mission, “Making regenerative medicine more accessible and user-friendly,” will be furthered through this collaboration, which will expand its regenerative medicine product development and CDMO business beyond Japan into the Taiwanese market.
Formosa Biomedical has long focused on preventive medicine as its core philosophy, with business operations spanning six major domains: lifestyle, biology, biochemistry, medical care, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. The company has built a comprehensive biotech ecosystem in Taiwan and, in recent years, has accelerated its resource integration and deepened its commitment to regenerative medicine. Through innovative technologies, it seeks to open new models of medical care, broaden health benefits, and serve a wider population.
