Taiwanese Scientist Liang-Kung Chen Tops Global Rankings for Sixth Consecutive Year
2025-10-26

The list of the world’s top 2% scientists was recently announced, with 1,470 Taiwanese researchers making the global roster. In the clinical medicine category, 398 Taiwanese scientists were recognized. Among them, Dr. Liang-Kung Chen, Director of Taipei City’s Guandu Hospital, has ranked first in Taiwan’s clinical medicine field for six consecutive years. He is followed by NTU Professor Chin-Hsiao Tseng and NTU Cancer Center Director Pan-Chyr Yang, who placed second and third, respectively.

Dr. Chen’s consistent first-place ranking in Taiwan’s clinical medicine field also places him among the top 2,000 scientists worldwide. In the field of geriatric medicine, he ranks third globally. With both high publication output and citation counts, he remains on an upward trajectory and is expected to continue as one of Taiwan’s most academically competitive medical scholars internationally.

Chen expressed that while he is honored to maintain the top position, his research is not driven by publication or citation metrics but by important scientific questions. With Taiwan entering a super-aged society this year, his team is focused on translating research findings into practical services to improve the future of healthcare for the elderly population, benefiting the nation.

Analysis of Taiwan’s top-ranking clinical medicine scientists shows that last year, six physicians from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) system made the list, surpassing NTU Hospital’s four. This year, both TVGH and NTU Hospital had seven physicians each on the roster. The remaining six honorees come from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital (two each), Mackay Memorial Hospital, and Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien (one each).

Experts note that the equal performance of NTU Hospital and TVGH this year may be related to Chin-Hsiao Tseng and Pan-Chyr Yang returning to NTU Hospital; last year, Tseng’s position was listed under the National Health Research Institutes and Yang under Academia Sinica. The TVGH cohort includes more mid-career physicians, making future trends worth monitoring. In terms of specialties, psychiatry remains a popular research field, with six Taiwanese experts recognized nationally.

NTU Hospital Director Chong-Jen Yu remarked that it is a significant achievement for physicians to excel not only in patient care and teaching but also in research. While NTU Hospital prioritizes both the quantity and quality of publications, it places particular emphasis on high-quality scientific output.

TVGH Director Wei-Ming Chen expressed delight that the hospital had one more physician recognized this year compared with last year. He affirmed that TVGH will continue to provide the necessary resources and environment to support physicians’ research endeavors.
