Zero Tariffs for US-Bound Generics and APIs Spark "National Team" Ambitions
2026-06-08

Following the recent trade agreement between the US and Taiwan, tariffs on Taiwan-manufactured generics and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) have been reduced to 0%. This development has energized the domestic pharmaceutical industry.

  • Strategic Opportunity: Chen Yi-fen, Chairperson of the Generic Medicine Association, noted that while Taiwan's domestic market is small, the US "Zero Tariff" status provides a massive opportunity for diversification.
  • High-Barrier Focus: To compete with high-volume producers in China and India, Taiwan is encouraged to focus on complex generics such as insulin pens (peptides), respiratory inhalers, and fixed-dose combinations (FDCs).
  • The "National Team": Industry leaders are calling for a government-led "National Team" to address capacity constraints and secure a multi-year budget (NT$24 billion over 4 years) for national pharmaceutical resilience and international expansion.
