SNQ National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Awards Revealed! Five Taiwanese Medical Achievements Adopted by WHO, Influencing Global Care Models
2026-06-11

The winners of the 28th National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Awards and the SNQ (Symbol of National Quality) were officially announced yesterday (Jan 7). Dr. Chen Wei-chao, Convener of the SNQ, announced that 290 teams passed the rigorous certification in the service category, resulting in 6 Silver and 12 Bronze awards. Notably, several achievements have been adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and incorporated into medical textbooks.

Global Impact of Taiwan’s Clinical Innovation: Dr. Chen highlighted critical clinical breakthroughs, including Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) for cancer, microinvasive aortic surgery, and high-difficulty renal cancer resections. In the digital health sector, molecular pathology, the National Eye Bank, and AI-driven diagnostics have provided essential resources for modern medicine. Furthermore, three clinical evidences have influenced international guidelines, and five outcomes have been integrated into global treatment protocols.

Strategic Internationalization: To deepen international ties, SNQ officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement with ICHOM (International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement) last December. Dr. Chang De-ming, Co-convener, announced the formation of an "International Certification Committee" to systematize Taiwan’s clinical data and allow international organizations to view the objective indicators and global positioning of Taiwanese hospitals at a glance.

Clinical Highlights from Awardees:

  • Taipei Veterans General Hospital (Silver Award): Leads the world in BNCT for malignant brain tumors (recurrent rate nearly 100%), attracting patients from 14 countries. Their research is cited in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) BNCT guidelines.
  • Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital (Silver Award): Developed a world-first ultrasound-guided microinvasive Achilles tendon rupture repair, reducing the incision to 0.8 cm with a 99% success rate.
  • National Defense Medical System: Ranked first in total certifications, with 26 projects passing the SNQ this year.
