President Lai: Three Strategic Pillars Mark the Golden Age for Taiwan's Medical Technology
2026-03-24

At the opening of the 2025 Taiwan Healthcare+ Expo on December 4, President Lai Ching-te declared that Taiwan has entered a prime era for medical technology (MedTech) development. He outlined three core drivers fueling this momentum:

  • A Synergetic Foundation: Taiwan combines world-class clinical medicine with a dominant ICT sector. The "convergence of giants"—integrating semiconductors, AI, IoT, cloud computing, and 5G—provides a robust technical backbone for MedTech innovation.
  • Governmental Priority: Building on the "5+2 Industrial Innovation" and "Six Core Strategic Industries" initiated by former President Tsai, the current administration has established the "Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee." This body actively coordinates policies for Smart Medicine, Regenerative Medicine, and Precision Medicine.
  • Legislative & Financial Support: Recent legal milestones, including the Biomedical Industry Development Act (2021) and the Regenerative Medicine Act (2024), have matured the regulatory landscape. Financially, the government has launched the "Healthy Taiwan Rooting Project"—a five-year, NT$48.9 billion initiative. Furthermore, the adoption of FHIR standards by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) is streamlining the integration of technology into clinical workflows.

President Lai also highlighted the success of the "One Country, Multiple Centers" medical outreach, which has expanded to 10 countries and 13 centers across Southeast Asia, effectively exporting Taiwan’s digital health ecosystems.
