Telecom leader Chunghwa Telecom has been actively investing in the smart healthcare sector in recent years. The company announced its collaboration with Taipei Veterans General Hospital (Taipei VGH) to create a next-generation 5G medical network demonstration site, integrating AI-driven smart healthcare platforms. The initiative includes the development of an AI-based predictive model for dialysis safety, as well as the integration of AI electrocardiogram wearable devices with health cloud services, continuing to advance innovative smart healthcare solutions.
LIN, RONG-SHY, General Manager of Chunghwa Telecom, stated that the company aims to empower health through technology by deepening cooperation with Taipei VGH, promoting smart healthcare innovations, and combining both parties’ expertise and technological advantages. The introduction of AI is expected to enhance accessibility and quality of care, delivering a more immediate and safe patient experience.
In recent years, Chunghwa Telecom has applied its 5G network to smart factories and medical facilities. LIN emphasized that advanced network infrastructure and communication technologies provide medical institutions with a high-speed and stable connection environment. At the same time, AI-driven innovations assist hospitals in further developing smart healthcare applications, jointly creating a sustainable vision for health.
Wui-Chiang Lee, Deputy Director of Taipei VGH, remarked that patients and sub-healthy populations require real-time monitoring at home or in long-term care facilities. By jointly promoting a smart healthcare industry-academia alliance, Taipei VGH’s clinical experience is combined with Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G and AI technologies to develop telemedicine and intelligent early warning systems. This approach aims to detect risks earlier, reduce rehospitalization, and provide peace of mind for patients and families.
Since signing a memorandum of understanding in 2024, Chunghwa Telecom and Taipei VGH have worked together to establish the next-generation 5G medical network demonstration site and deepen collaboration in smart healthcare. The hospital’s mobile network coverage has been fully upgraded, and the entire medical team now utilizes 5G services, marking a key milestone in smart healthcare infrastructure.
Additionally, the collaboration has introduced smart healthcare platforms and applications. Chunghwa Telecom noted that together, they successfully established an AI predictive model for dialysis safety, effectively reducing patient dialysis risks, earning the 2025 Future Technology Award. The partners also advanced the “Smart Healthcare for Elderly Care Support System Project,” integrating AI ECG wearables with the health cloud platform to enable remote and intelligent management of cardiovascular health for residents of veterans’ homes.
Building on this foundation, Chunghwa Telecom and Taipei VGH will jointly promote the National Science and Technology Council Smart Healthcare Industry-Academia Alliance Project. Taipei VGH will lead the development of core AI models, focusing on a “multimodal learning-based risk prediction and diagnostic module for heart failure patients,” integrating diverse medical data to improve clinical predictive accuracy, with multiple hospitals serving as on-site validation sites. Chunghwa Telecom will provide technological support through its DeepFlow MLOps platform, enabling full lifecycle management and flexible deployment of AI models, facilitating the implementation of medical AI applications.
Furthermore, Taipei VGH’s “Healthy Taiwan Deep Cultivation Project” plans to establish a Remote Health Center, which will leverage the existing health cloud platform in collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom. The center will incorporate advanced AI and physiological monitoring devices to create a comprehensive remote healthcare ecosystem. When patients’ physiological data indicate abnormalities or are flagged by case managers, the system will promptly notify the patient and assist in rapid appointment scheduling, establishing a “green channel” for medical visits. This approach aims to shorten waiting times, provide timely and convenient healthcare for an aging population, and enhance care efficiency and accessibility.
