Ministries of Environment and Health Convene Joint Committee to Protect Vulnerable Populations
2026-05-28

The National Climate Change Strategy Committee and the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee held their first joint meeting to address the intersection of environmental shifts and public health.

  • Collaborative Research: Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming and Health Minister Shih Chung-liang will allocate joint budgets (initially funded by the Air Pollution Fund) to investigate why lung cancer rates continue to rise despite lower PM2.5 concentrations—potentially linking indoor air quality and lifestyle habits.
  • Just Transition: A major focus of the 2026 budget will be Precision Health Protection for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and the homeless, who are disproportionately affected by extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Strategic Directions: 1. Bi-annual joint committee meetings to align cross-ministerial energy with private sector expertise. 2. Translating complex monitoring data into accessible health guidelines and early warning systems. 3. Refining adaptation strategies for extreme temperatures to ensure the safety of high-risk populations.
